a-berry-berry-good-year

Sometimes we design a dinner party menu around a dessert. Often we plan an outfit around a pair of shoes. And when one has a love of Garnish, we tend to plan the gift around the Garnish!

Case in point, end of school year ‘thanks for teaching my child multiplication facts because you have waaay more patience than me’ gifts for the teachers and other staff members in the school.

Haven’t used the rounded take out container in a while…don’t know why, it’s super fun…so thought I’d pull that out. We like consumable gifts when gifting to folks who will be receiving from many folks i.e teachers, coaches etc. So here’s how we ran with this idea. Strawberries ripen in June, school ends in June, so homemade jam came to mind (plus, I totally love the square mason jars). Not hard to do, can be done en masse and umm, yummy! You need a little something to go with that jam so decided on lemon blueberry muffins. Made in a mini-size…you will have an abundance to gift and to stash in your own freezer.

To put it all together, placed two sheets of tissue in the rounded take out container. The jam went in the bottom and the muffins, in the small cellophane bag on top. Closed it up and pulled out my little love, the Xyron creative station (btw, if you don’t have one it’s the perfect opportunity for your 50% off coupons for the craft store). Printed out something fun on the computer, trimmed and ran through the Xyron with an adhesive cartridge. Here’s where I wish I had done things differently. I attached the sticker and then did the twine, but after looking at it I think it would have looked better if the twine went on first and then the sticker. Oh well, live and learn!

I have to admit, I was pretty proud of this one. I like the play on words, with ‘a berry berry good year’ and the fun ‘happy summer’. I don’t consider myself very talented in the typography front. I tend to get all locked up in choosing fonts and how I want it all to look. So I tried to focus on a Garnish philosophy, keep it simple girl and keep it fun. I share this with you all as I feel I’m not alone in this arena. When it comes to dressing up your Garnish, pull your inspiration from all around you…magazines, newspapers, nature, whatever works for you. I highly recommend picking up skirt! magazine. The graphic artists are brilliant and the design is total eye candy. Anyway, in April I was South and brought the mag home with me. I knew it would come in handy for inspiration. And sure enough, it came through for me for the layout for this container. I know it’s nothing super spectacular but hey, it was a big accomplishment for me!

I feel as if I’m rambling so I apologize. My point is simply this, if I can do it, then you can too (trust me!). Look for writing styles in magazines and books and use that to inspire. Labels are awesome but sometimes you need a little more freedom. Print something up, trim and glue (although I do love that Xyron) to your Garnish.

That’s it…done rambling. Now… go Garnish and Enjoy!
